Below is SABM's response to
EC's statement on 26th April 2010
Unrealistic May 1 Deadline Given By The EC For Checking The Electoral Rolls
The Election Commission’s announcement on 26th April that the public has up to 1st May to check their names against the electoral roll and if need be, to then submit a relevant form to the state election director within 7 days should there be discrepancies, is highly disturbing.
According to the EC, this supplementary electoral roll for the fourth quarter of 2009 will be displayed at 998 places nationwide. Well and good that numerous places have been provided, but the EC has overlooked the fact that the period prescribed covers five working days.
How many are able to get away easily from their workplaces to fulfill their duty and role as citizens and voters? Surely, at the very least, one weekend should have been included.
Furthermore, in stating the need to fill up a form to rectify errors, the EC has failed to specify what this form is and where it can be obtained, thus leaving voters in the dark.
As such, Saya Anak Bangsa Malaysia (SABM) calls for the Election Commission to extend the 5-day period to at least 3 weeks and to provide more concrete information on what to do if registered voters’ names are absent from the roll.
SABM is aware that there are currently 4.39 million unregistered voters as of December 2009, as reported by the EC. Because SABM deems the Voter Registration drive and campaign as very crucial to upholding and strengthening democracy in our nation, it is presently actively engaged in registering new voters, and does this in collaboration with other Rakyat Initiatives,.
One of the various civic endeavours is the ‘Voice Your Choice’ campaign organised by EPIC (Extraordinary People Impacting Community). This is a group of non-partisan young people and their aim is to register 2 million voters by year’s end.
Another is ‘Rock The Vote!’ by SABM. This initiative aims to register youths through a series of gigs nationwide. The first leg of the Rock The Vote! tour is at Number One Cafe - Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman, this Saturday (1st May) 2010.

The SABM voters registration team was at the Jom Daftar Undi organised by the
Sekretariat Belia Negeri Selangor (SBNS) under the portfolio of the MB of Selangor, last weekend.
Approached by SBNS to help out at the Jom Daftar Undi, we were told that they couldn't find any Penolong Registrar to be at the event for voters' registration.
This was an event focused on attracting the youngsters to register as a voter. And yet, a few days before the event, they were without any Penolong Registrar to register the crowd. They asked if SABM could get them anyone to do so.
(Penolong Registrar is someone appointed by the SPR to do registration of voters on behalf of SPR)And we did, we managed to get the Penolong Registrar who always help us at our Voters' Registration event to help at the Jom Undi Daftar. And guess where does this Penolong Registrar come from?
SABM is still in the midst of getting our own team to be appointed as Penolong Registrar by the SPR. Apparently, only those from the political parties or ex-civil servants can be a Penolong Registrar... As such, whenever we have any Voters Registration event, we need help from our Penolong Registrar friends in any of the political parties, until we have our own. For this instance, we managed to get help from DAP.
Yes, we BRIDGED the SBNS from the Selangor state government with the Penolong Registrar from DAP!
And we thought that all these while the Selangor state government is run by PKR, PAS and DAP! It left us wonder what went wrong, now that they need a third party to be a link between the state government and DAP.
Shouldn't there be a direct connection?
Are not the some of the Selangor State Exco from DAP?
If yes, why such simple task cannot be arranged?
Imagine our shock and disbelief upon knowing this!
After awhile, I came to the conclusion that, either the State Excos are not too bothered about the state government's affair (perhaps their duty is only to show up at functions giving speeches and shaking hands)
or
the organiser was just simply inefficient...
Anyway, SABM were glad to be of help. But we sure hope that this incident will not repeat again. There should be better communication between the two!

People started trickling in as early as 5pm yesterday, by 6pm, the Rumah was already packed with people, despite of it being a working day and the crawling traffic caused by the rain. And I thought Malaysians don't practise punctuality!

Our merchandising booth was never left alone, until the official launch of SABM. And it started to get busy after that. :) THANK YOU ALL for your support. And we're indeed happy to keep the change. :p
We started the evening by singing our national anthem. :)
Haris presented the SABM charter after we sang Negaraku.
Everyone was listening attentively.

People keep walking in despite the rain.
After the SABM website was launched, The Core group of SABM had a Q&A session with the crowd. This is followed by breaking of fast together after the Maghrid prayers.
The former president of the Bar Council was spotted in the midst of the crowd. ;)
Malik Imtiaz was there too. :)
Rahmat manning the indie music stall.
Our SABM band (Mila, Black, Meor and Boom) performing Anak Bangsa Malaysia's song.

Me, Jacklyn Victor and San Jiun.
About 250 people braved the rain and traffic jam to make it to the launch. The atmopshere was light and easy. Everyone seemed to mingle easily with one another. Many were excited when they saw the SABM Tees and the buttons. Our mechanding booth was kept busy all the time, with many buyers whom gladly had us to keep the change, as all proceeds goes to the SABM fund, for future activities. To that, we smiled and said 'Thank you very much'.
