Remembering Toni...

It has been a year now since you left us.

I'll never forget how I first met you. It was 5th of October 2007- our first and last encounter...

I was on the way to the Free Burma Vigil from my office, taking the LRT. I was rushing, thinking that I was late.

In the LRT, I heard two persons talking about the candlelight vigil that I was going to... and I thought to myself, "Ahh I'm not late and alone, there are another two college students who are also on the way..."

But the both of you seemed to be preparing for what to say at the vigil...

I don't know how, we somehow started to talk and we introduced ourselves.

You introduced yourself as Toni from Sisters in Islam, and your friend as Shannon the Director of Amnesty Malaysia then.

You told me not to be worry, as both the MCs of the event were in the train with me, so, we were not going to be late.

I remember telling you that you looked very young and I thought that you and Shannon were college students. :p You laughed and told me briefly about your work and said that you had been doing this for 20 years now, but you have not given up hope. You were still ever so hopeful of change.

Oh, how I was inspired by you that night...

You radiated hope and strength to me...

You had left footprints in my life...

Thank you, Toni Kassim.

The life you lived so passionately, boldly and full of inspiration will never be forgotten...
